Describe your latest book in one sentence.
Jake Elderfield didn’t come to Prague looking for trouble. But when his old friend Liz vanishes while working on a newly discovered masterpiece, he’s pulled into a deadly game.

What soundtrack do you suggest readers should listen to while they read your latest book?
Something dark and dangerous – Peter and the Wolf? But with some upbeat highlights – “Hold on, I’m coming“ by Sam & Dave, “Call the Fire Brigade” by The Move, “Love is all Around” by The Troggs and “White Wedding” by Billy Idol - you’ll understand why when you read the story!

What's next?
Too Many Cooks. Continuing the adventures of Jake Elderfield and Kat Dominova, righting wrongs and vanquishing baddies by the skin of their teeth.

What was the first book you remember reading?
A Bear called Paddington by Michael Bond

Please list your top five all-time favourite books (any genre)

  • Robert Goddard: Take No Farewell
  • Patrick O Brian: Master and Commander – and yes, dammit – the whole series!
  • Len Deighton: SS-GB
  • Jonathan Gash: Lovejoy at Large
  • John Mortimer: The First Rumpole Omnibus

What is the most underrated crime novel, and why does it deserve more attention?
CJ Sansom's books for his great historic whodunnits that make you feel like a time traveller.

The Gumshoe Dude sneaks into your latest story while you’re not looking. What is he doing there?
The Gumshoe dude. Hmmm - I don't normally let anyone into my books without a detailed cross examination first. Why? Well, once I've got a working title - a theme if you like, my next stop is the characters. How they interact with others and the role that develops for them drives my plot - there's no room for bystanders! Who are they? What are they wearing? How do they speak? What are they thinking? And most importantly, How do they respond to pressure?
So, if this chap featured in my story he'd need a defined role - let's say he's a private detective, hired to investigate someone's extra marital affair and when he goes through their bins looking for evidence he finds some intriguing correspondence - is someone being blackmailed?

And now for the quick questions:

Poirot – he’s so slick and fussy – you have to love him.

Keyboard every time – if it was a pen I wouldn’t be able to read it!

What’s wrong with good old fashioned paper?

If you turn on the radio now, what station is playing?
Radio 4 - Jack Dee chairing ‘I’m sorry I haven’t a clue’
