Police Procedurals
Simply, the police procedural is a story where the crimes are investigated by one or more police detectives (with help from forensic experts, legal professionals, medical examiners, psychologists etc). Some police procedurals lean more towards the whodunnit and cosier side of crime, while others are not holding back on the psychological elements, or the graphic descriptions of the crime scenes.
Some of the best-loved crime fiction authors can be found in this genre: PD James, Colin Dexter, Georges Simenon, Reginald Hill, and more recently Jo Nesbo, Ann Cleeves, Val McDermid and Ian Rankin.
