In a now-or-never moment, Stephanie Plum made the decision of a lifetime. But some lifetimes are shorter than others. Over the years, Stephanie has acquired a few enemies.

It's an occupational hazard as a bond enforcement agent. The problem is that she currently has an enemy who is a mystery. Disturbing packages, threatening notes, and near misses are keeping Stephanie in the dark and her tormentor, who wants her dead, in the shadows.

Bond jumper Greb Tusi would also like to get rid of Stephanie. He's wanted for going on a three-hour rampage-that "wasn't his fault"- mugging an old lady and stealing a hearse. Lacking Enemy Number One's creativity and strong work ethic, Tusi has chosen a more minimalistic approach to dealing with Trenton's best-known bounty hunter.

Trying to push her off roofs, bridges, in front of trucks, and any place else where a little push can go a long way. Ex-fiancé and mentor, Ranger, isn't an enemy yet, but Stephanie is worried she might be pushing the boundaries of friendship. Ranger has taken a security job for a powerful political figure, and he needs Stephanie's help.

It's next to impossible to say no to the man of mystery, but Stephanie might be in over her head. Ranger's job is high-stress, high-stakes, and high-maintenance, and Stephanie is pretty sure that when Ranger discovers the job was kidnapped under her watch, he'll proverbially kill her. The clock is ticking for Stephanie to find her kidnapped victim, FTA Greb Tusi, and the person who's behind the creepy messages.
