Detective Inspector Ruth Hunter has barely arrived in her new role at North Wales Police Force when a gruesome murder scene needs her attention. A local teacher has been attacked, and her body carved with strange symbols.

Another body follows, and Ruth is suddenly at the heart of a search for a serial killer. But as she struggles to let go of the past and move on from her partner's unresolved disappearance Ruth might make a misstep that costs more than her pride.
